Inside Afinety: Meet Matt Pickens, Senior Client Executive For Afinety

Q: What is your role at Afinety?

Matt: As a Client Executive, my role is to be an advocate and trusted resource for law firms. I help our clients achieve their business and technological goals by delivering an action plan to remove roadblocks, identify potential challenges, and protect against the unexpected.

Q: What does your day-to-day typically look like?

Matt: My typical day begins with reviewing email. That way if there are any pressing issues, I can prioritize them throughout the day. Once that’s done, I check my RSS feed and LinkedIn for news and trends in the legal tech market. From there, I am prospecting, progressing opportunities through the funnel and collaborating with clients to develop and implement solutions to their technology challenges.

Q: Tell us a little bit about why you chose Afinety and how you see your role here supporting your long-term goals?

Matt: The people. I’ve been in this industry for over 10 years and the Afinety team is second to none. Everyone is extremely talented, knowledgeable, and committed to providing the best client experience possible. Being a part of this team is an opportunity to learn from industry innovators and build lasting relationships with our clients.

Q: What values of Afinety do you most align with and why?

Matt: Afinety’s unmatched focus on the client experience. It is the foundation to building long lasting partnerships.

Q: What’s unique about the legal tech industry that someone in mainstream tech may not experience?

Matt: No law firm is the same. Every firm has a unique way of running their business. As a result, a one-size fits all software solution doesn’t exist. That becomes evident when you look at the sheer number of legal software and applications available today. Most of the software and applications do one, or a few things, very well. The result is firms end up using multiple systems to perform different independent functions. If those systems aren’t configured and integrated properly, it can result in numerous issues from data loss, to downtime, to even losing a client.

Q: What has been your experience working at Afinety?

Matt: Eye opening. As a new member of the Afinety team, everyone from leadership down is committed to our client’s success, and it shows. I have been absolutely floored by the fervent endorsement from our clients. Their approval of what we are doing at Afinety is profound.

Q: When you aren’t working, what might we find you doing?

Matt: With two kids under two years old, when not working you’ll likely find me playing with trains, coloring, or having dance parties. When I do have downtime, I really enjoy cooking, camping, off-roading in the Jeep, and building superfluous toys from Lego’s to RC cars.

Q: It’s officially winter, do you have any favorite activities or traditions you are excited for this season?

Matt: I like to ski. While Michigan likely isn’t the first place that comes to mind when I mention skiing, we have some pretty decent slopes. It’s not Park City but there is enough here to soothe the craving.

Q: What is a fun fact that people might not know about you?

Matt: During my undergrad, I bartended at a comedy club for four years. Comedians, especially road comics, really get to know the bartenders at comedy clubs. It has been over 15 years since I left the comedy club but there are several comedians I still keep in touch with.

Q: What excites you the most when you think of the future and achievements of Afinety that are to come?

Matt: The two things that excite me most are:

  1. Afinety’s dedication to putting the client experience first; and
  2. The commitment investment in our people and resources.

Thank you, Matt – we are glad to have you on the team!
